Meghan markle, Prince harry and their children Archie and Lili showcased a casual California look in their 2021 holiday card, but one item of clothing will be of particular interest to royal observers: Archie’s jeans!
The 2-year-old opens a new fashionable avenue for royals, who typically keep their young boys in shorts until the age of 8 – just ask Prince george.
Prince william and Kate Middletonthe eldest son of, who has just marked his 8th anniversary in July, only recently switched to a more adult outfit after appearing in shorts and high socks for most of her life until this year.
The only notable exceptions to this rule – which can also be seen in the clothes worn by George’s 3-year-old younger brother Prince louis – were when George went country-chic in blue pants tucked into Hunter boots for the 2018 Cambridges Holiday Card filmed in their Norfolk-based Anmer Hall estate and when the formality of Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May 2018 called for a military style set similar to those worn by her uncle and father (with a soft and personalized touch).
George’s iconic look as a young boy is “definitely a look for the royals,” Sophie Mirman, founder of the Trotters royalty’s favorite children’s clothing store, told PEOPLE this summer, “and there’s that thing. rather odd in English schools where kids have to wear shorts, even in winter, with their knees icy – it’s almost like unwritten code. “
On the other hand, Archie – who moved to the United States with his parents last year and welcomed his little sister on June 4 – is subject to more flexible style guidelines as Harry and Meghan have retreated as active members of the royal family.
As for Meghan, she and her sister-in-law Kate each quickly adopted the royal outfit and etiquette before tying the knot in the Windsor home.

Although Meghan went out bare-legged for her and Harry engagement photo call in November 2017, she slipped in sheer curtains for her first public appearance as a newlywed three days after the couple’s wedding in May 2018. (A few months later, the Duchess of Sussex stepped away from the traditional royal manicure – also pure and neutral – with black varnish.)
In the new Sussexes greeting card, Meghan avoids the “Duchess Slant”, and Harry goes barefoot – a royal first greeting card for the Duke of Sussex! Earlier this month, William also broke tradition with shorts in the Cambridge Family 2021 Holiday Card.

As for the woman at the head of the royal family, queen elizabeth, it has its own style code: cheerful and bright!
The Queens rainbow wardrobe is both chic and practical. Beautiful girl Sophie, Countess of Wessex said in the 2016 documentary The queen at 90: “She has to stand out so people can say ‘I saw the queen.’ Remember, when she gets somewhere the crowd is two, three, four, 10, 15 deep and someone wants to be able to tell they saw the Queen’s hat a bit in the process. “
