Street of Dreams Inspired Patio Ideas: “Even a Small Space Can Be a Luxurious Extension of Your Home”
If you’re looking to enhance your patio entertainment, the 2021 NW Natural Street of Dreams Luxury Home Tour in Happy Valley through August 22 features outdoor spaces large and small designed for dining and meetings.
With one ticket ($ 20), visitors to Street of Dreams will see ideas from the region’s top builders, interior designers and landscape architects at two Happy Valley developments: Heritage Crest, a gated community of custom homes, at 12500 SE Mount Scott Blvd., and Pleasant Valley Villages, a planned community with new production homes by Holt Homes at 11878 SE Bridal Veil Falls Place.
Outdoor furnishings can be as beautiful and upscale as they are in your living room, from lighting to rugs. Or a backyard retreat can just be a swivel lounge chair.
Designers select durable materials that should last for decades and a timeless style that won’t look out of fashion over time. Often they match the architecture and era of the house with the extended living space outside.
Due to higher demand, more and more interior building materials are being manufactured to meet standards for exterior use. The covered patios are outfitted with metal chandeliers and pendant lights, Solaris outdoor counters by Caesarstone, and other luxuries that were once reserved inside the home.
Interior designer Whitney Hicks was a project manager at Holt Homes for the three Street of Dreams circuit model homes in Pleasant Valley Villages. She and her team selected finishes and furnishings, and she worked closely with staging and surface design partners to present distinctive looks.
The three different model homes on the tour have a smaller footprint than the luxury homes, but offer open floor plans and glass doors similar to outdoor living spaces.
Here are Hicks’ tips for creating an inviting outdoor living space:
Designed for year round comfort. Choose the patio site carefully for the best views and protection from wind, rain, sun and snow. “When selecting furniture, it’s important to think about the function of the space, not just how you want to use it, but how it will actually be used the most,” she says, asking, “will it be used more for lounging than for dinners?”
Invest in good furniture: If you buy from a store that has patio chairs on display, sit down long enough to make sure they are comfortable. “Not all outdoor furniture is created equal,” says Hicks.
Customize a set: Swap two side chairs for a bench on one side of a dining table. For a seating area, replace an included side table with a colorful table and add large floor cushions.
Change your look with the seasons: With neutral-colored furniture, add decor in colors and patterns that coordinate with your home’s interior. But don’t forget to shop around for outdoor rated pieces; it is not an air-conditioned living room. Have fun with an outdoor rug during the summer. “The beauty of the outdoors is that it can evolve,” says Hicks.
Any place can be an outdoor retreat. “Even a small outdoor space can be a luxurious extension of your home,” says Hicks.
In the backyard of the Columbia Comfort model home, she and her team added a rectangular dining set, four wicker chairs, and a Blaze grill from Standard TV & Appliances. The porch of another model home has a pair of classic white Adirondack chairs.
Weatherproof curtains and drapes add privacy, and quality lighting provides mood lighting after the sun sets on a patio or deck, porch, or pergola.
Make the yard relaxing with a swinging hammock and pretty planted pots, or invite people to eat at the alfresco dining table or enjoy the fire pit.
