Villa at Westhampton offers assisted living in luxury and beauty
When you consider that living in the Hamptons is often equated with a life of luxury, the question of retiremente does not come back often. Now there is a way to retire with dignity while still having the help that elderly residents sometimes need. Opened in 2017, the Villa at Westhampton is an exclusive assisted living community nestled along 10 acres of expansive lawns, spectacular gardens, walking paths and picturesque views. It is designed for active seniors who value their independence, knowing that care and fellowship is readily available. We caught up with Jeffrey Thompson, Executive Director of The Villa at Westhampton, to learn more about the elegant retirement community.
How did you come to run the Villa at Westhampton as Executive Director?
I have worked in the senior care industry for over 30 years. I had heard that there was a brand new assisted living property under construction in the Hamptons and started researching. I knew it was the first and only to be built on the East End and I knew I had to be a part of it. I live about 20 minutes from the building.
The Villa is such a beautiful place.
The Villa in Westhampton officially opened on August 14, 2017. It was a 10 year project in the works as the property we are sitting on was acquired in pieces. There was a house on part of this property and the family members of the owner who sold this property now reside here.
What types of equipment are available for its residents
We have two separate patios where residents can enjoy the fresh air and the sun. Many of our residents are walking around the building and there have been several sightings of wild turkeys and deer. In the spring and summer we will have barbecues on the patio.
Are there any age requirements or restrictions?
DenyWhether or not it is 18 or over is the legal age, but our median age is 85 and services are geared more towards an older population. Regarding restrictions, we require a medical assessment prior to admission to ensure each resident is following admission guidelines and we have the resources to provide the necessary level of care.
What exactly does “enhanced assisted living” mean?
Enhanced Assisted Living is an optional license that a property can obtain that provides a higher level of service or “enhanced” services to residents. The Enhanced Assisted Living was designed to allow residents to age in place for a longer period of time. Improved services could include routine nursing services such as assistance with insulin injections, oxygen, basic wound care, colostomy care, Foley care, and other routine nursing services.
What does nursing involve?
Medication Management is the most common and widely used service we provide. Nurses manage medications for each resident. This includes ordering medications, working with doctors and pharmacies when orders are changed, and reminding residents to take their medications.
How important is it for your residents to be able to continue to live independent lives?
The goal of assisted living is to create an atmosphere in which residents maintain as much independence as possible and know that help is available when needed. As people age, their needs change and assisted living is designed to meet those changing needs. Our wide variety of scheduled events provide our residents with the opportunity to pursue the pursuit of lifelong passions and stimulate the exploration of new interests and hobbies.
What living conditions are available to residents?
We offer both private accommodation and options for couples. We offer shared options on a limited basis.
We have several models of large studios and a limited number of spacious T2 with a separate living room. We also provide a higher level of service for those who require additional care due to the onset of dementia related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease. We are licensed as a Special Needs Assistance Residence, providing a warm and caring atmosphere, enabling our residents to achieve an optimal quality of life in a safe, secure and home-like environment.environment.
I noticed that the houses were named after wines: Dolcetto, Bordeaux, Chianti and Asti.
Long Island has some of the best wineries and wineries around, and being in the East End, we felt it was appropriate to name the rooms after the wine.
There is a lot of buzz about dining at the Villa. Can you talk about this?
We have a beautiful dining room and a chef who prepares fresh meals daily. It is a restaurant-style eatery where residents order from a menu that changes daily. Residents help us write the menu at our Resident Food Council meetings where menu choice ideas are discussed. We also have a private dining room that residents can reserve for family reunions around the holidays or to celebrate special occasions.
What types of leisure activities do residents enjoy?
There is a full calendar of events scheduled each month. And just like for dinner, we have a Residents’ Council meeting where residents give their opinion on planned activities. We integrate a variety of gross motor and fine motor activities as well as activities to stimulate the brain. We have wonderful entertainment, as well as current events, celebrations, church services, and plenty of movies.
Recently, we had an Oscar party where the residents dressed, walked the red carpet, and each received an award and a statuette. Photos and videos of our activities are published on our Facebook page. We also have a bus to take residents to the community for shopping, the library and community events. Residents also like to go out to eat for a change of pace.
Do you have anything to add?
In addition to receiving three restaurant-style meals a day, residents benefit from housekeeping and laundry services, and there is an on-site hair and nail salon. Medical services are available in-house by appointment such as primary physician, eye care, audiology, podiatry, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, laboratory services, x-rays and imaging. The main medical insurances are accepted by the providers. People don’t realize that they can visit the Villa anytime (seven days a week) and that short stays are welcome. We even have a program for snowbirds who can stay at the Villa for up to six months during the spring and summer months and in the fall.
The Villa is located at 68 Old Country Road in Westhampton. For more information, call 631-240-8100, by email [email protected] or visit hamptonsvilla.com.
