Woman arrested for leaving children unattended, threatening CYF worker – WPXI
PITTSBURGH – A Pittsburgh woman faces charges after police say she left four of her children at home alone and then threatened a child, youth and family worker.
Laura Barney, 32, has been charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child, the offense of terrorist threats and the offense of resisting arrest after Tuesday’s incident on Marlow Street in the Elliot neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
Police said a CYF employee came to the house for a meeting and found Barney was not there, although four of his five children were found at home alone. Children are 4 to 9 years old.
According to the criminal complaint, the CYF employee told police that she did not see the eldest child, a 12-year-old, but could have been in the basement where she was. believed he had stayed.
Police went to look for him and found what the officer described as appalling conditions, including several puddles on the ground, a smell of filth and lots of midges. But the boy was not at home.
The social worker told police she made several attempts to contact Barney and tell him that CYF was preparing to take her children.
“Ms. Barney told her, ‘Do what you have to do’, before getting angry and threatening to ‘cut her off’ when she gets home,” according to court documents.
Barney told police she was at the nail salon while her children were home alone. The children were taken to Mercy Hospital for examination.
